Spending Your First Shabbat in the IDF? To ease some of your concerns about enlisting in the IDF: about a week before your enlistment, you’ll receive a message letting you know whether you’ll be heading home for the first Shabbat or staying on base. This way, you can plan accordingly in terms of what to pack. It's worth noting that most soldiers go home for the first Shabbat after enlistment.

If it turns out you’re staying on base for Shabbat, don’t worry - we’ve got some tips for you!

1. Rest – Finally, you don’t have to wake up early! Use this time to rest and catch up on sleep before another busy week ahead.

2. Get to Know New Friends – While you’re far from home, you’re not alone! You’ll spend Shabbat alongside other soldiers on base. Take this time to exchange experiences, get to know each other on a deeper level, and maybe even make lifelong friends!

3. Free Time – Besides resting, Shabbat routines provide you with plenty of free time! You can spend this time reading a book, playing board games, binge-watching shows, listening to music, or enjoying the snacks you bought at the canteen. Also! don’t forget to browse through articles on the IDF recruits website (‘Mitgaisim’).

4. Call Family and Friends Back Home – Even while spending Shabbat far from home, you can still connect with loved ones. Call your family and friends and tell them about the busy week you’ve had. From experience, a call home can recharge your batteries for the week ahead.
